Begins June 9, 2012 with
“Our Local Seas: A Comeback Story”
Oliveto owners Bob and Maggie Klein and Executive Chef Jonah Rhodehamel are pleased to announce It’s Complicated, a series of conversations about eating, cooking, and the politics of food, aimed at going just beyond the quick-take, 140 character understanding of complex food-system issues.
To kick off the series, Oliveto is hosting a panel on June 9, 2012, “Our Local Seas: A Comeback Story,” discussing the state of our local seas. Despite the dire conditions of fisheries in most parts of the world, many of the fisheries of our northern Pacific coast are in a different condition. Here, the past 30 years of regulation and good stewardship of several of our local fisheries are bringing about a turn-around of some fish populations. Fishermen and scientists alike are seeing stable fisheries and increasing numbers of white sea bass, halibut, petrale sole, yellowtail jack, albacore, herring, some rock cods, and squid and predict an improving future for those and other local species.
It’s a great emerging local success story, and Oliveto’s It’s Complicated will present how it came about and what needs to be done to secure and expand its success. Ed Tavasieff, local small-boat hook-and-line fisherman, Ed Ueber, former superintendent of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, Tom Worthington of Monterey Fish, and others, will tell the story.
“The sea isn’t one ecosystem, or seven, but thousands of discrete biological systems and fisheries, involving an unlimited number of complex interrelationships,” says Bob Klein. “When we thought of beginning a series of forums about food-related topics, and wondered if we had something new to add, this local perspective – seeing things close-up – seemed to be a worthwhile addition for our understanding of this and many food topics.”
Following the forum, Chef Rhodehamel will present Oliveto’s 11th Annual Oceanic Dinners June 12 through June 15, 2012 – four nights of extraordinary seafood dinners which will include reprises of historic San Francisco seafood grill treasures, along with other dishes, some down-home, some more elevated like Crab Louie, Hog Island Oyster Po’Boys, and Sand Dabs stuffed with local spot shrimp.
